Mission and Vision

Goals

Course of Study

Hesperia Junior High School has a seven-period schedule with an academic focus session at the beginning of the day. All students will be scheduled into language arts, social studies, math, science, and PE. Honors classes and advanced math are offered for those students interested in more challenging coursework. The remaining periods will be utilized for a variety of classes based on individual student needs. Reading and Math ExCEL classes are specifically designed to provide intensive instruction and assistance in addition to the core curriculum. The AVID class provides a support system for those students interested in college preparation; minimum requirements and an interview process are required to participate in this class. A variety of elective programs, including band and choir, round out course offerings. Each class in which a student receives a passing grade is worth five credits. Students will receive a Certificate of Promotion upon successful completion of 110 credits at the end of the eighth grade.

Extra Curricular Activities

Participation in extra-curricular activities is highly recommended. In order to participate in sports teams, students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average and satisfactory citizenship. In addition, current physicals are necessary to participate in sports programs. ASB Leadership, clubs, Academic Pentathlon, and the AVID program are other options for students to get involved in school activities. Contact the Athletic Director, ASB Advisor, AVID Coordinator or administration for information on these programs.

Counseling

The counseling department is responsible for the scheduling and testing of students, and monitoring student progress, in addition to providing counseling services. Group counseling covering a variety of topics, such as peer pressure, divorce, and drugs and alcohol, is set up through the counseling office. Parents, teachers, or students may inquire for these services. Schedule changes will only be considered during the first three weeks of a term. They will only be considered following specific steps, including a parent conference, teacher approval, and administrator approval.

Progress Reports & Student Handbook

Teachers will complete the student progress report contained in this handbook at the mid-quarter point (aprox. dates - week of 9/08, 11/10, 2/2 & 4/19). Teachers will check parent and student signatures after each progress report is complete. The student handbook may also be used to monitor student progress on a daily basis.

Library & Textbooks

The library is for reading and studying. Library hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All books except reference books may be checked out. Textbooks are loaned to students for their use during the school year and must be returned at the conclusion of each course. Students are responsible for lost or damaged library materials and textbooks. Students are required to pay the replacement cost promptly. Students may not participate in extra-curricular activities until all charges are paid in full.

Bus Transportation

Bus transportation is a privilege and not a responsibility of the school district. Failure to observe district rules may result in denial of transportation.

Emergency Cards - Medication

All emergency cards must be kept up to date. We must have a parent/guardian or contact person to call in case of emergency. Please notify the attendance office or any change of address or phone number during the year. Per Education Code 49423, any pupil who needs medication prescribed by a physician during the school day may be assisted by the school nurse or other designated school personnel. The school must have a written statement from the parent or guardian for school personnel to supervise the dispensing. This also includes over-the-counter medication (i.e. inhalers, aspirin, or cold medicine).
