Library Guidelines

Library Guidelines
Teachers may sign-up on the library master calendar to bring classes to the library. Let the. Librarian know as soon as possible if you are not able to attend the library that day, so she may schedule someone else.
All seventh and eighth grade Language Arts teachers may sign-up for an orientation if desired. Library rules and use will be discussed using handouts for better understanding. Teachers may send students to the library for research (four students at a time) with a signed and dated pass. Only those using the library as a 'resource will remain. Teachers may check-out materials from the library to use in class (students nay not do this for teachers).
Students are to be reminded to be quiet while using the library: they must have an ill to check-out books: they may not eat or drink in the library.

Mission, Goals & Objectives
The mission and goals of Hesperia Junior High School's Library Media Center is to provide materials and resources that support and enhance the Hesperia Unified School District's curriculum. The library's mission is to encourage students to become familiar with the resources available to them within the library. To train students to effectively use the library and its resources. Sharpening students research skills will enable students to develop and achieve academic success. Our goal in accordance with American Association of School Librarians and Association for Educational Communications and Technology is to provide relevant and enticing books for students. To accomplish our goals we strive:
1. To provide resources and materials that will enhance and support the school's curriculum program, with regards to individual students varies interests, abilities and learning styles.
2. To provide resources and materials that will encourage growth in factual knowledge and literary appreciation.
3. To provide information that will assist students to make intellectual decisions in their day-to-day activities.
4. To provide materials that reflect the contributions made by individuals or groups that helped shape our American -heritage.
5. To provide materials of the highest quality that reflects the community's diverse ethnic backgrounds to assure a comprehensive library media collection appropriate for all users.
6. To provide instruction in the effective use of all resource materials, including print, audio and electronic

Overview

The library media center has both a print and non-print collection and provides services and programs. The center is staffed by a full-time library media specialist and encourages parent volunteers.

The selection of library materials is an ongoing process. Materials are selected to serve the breadth of the curriculum and the specific interests of all students. Selection is based on many sources: California Recommended Reading List, teachers recommendations, favorable reviews found in Follett's review source list-A.L.A., Booklist, Newbery Medal/Honor, Notable/est Books (A.L.A.), Library Journal, Wilson's Junior High School etc.

At the present time, the library collection has approximately 13,075 Books, 28 periodicals, 467 videos, 138 audiocassettes and 1 newspaper subscription. The collection is divided into sections: reference, nonfiction, fiction, story collection and accelerated reader. To maintain appropriate materials weeding is an ongoing part of collection development. Removal of materials are made according to the procedures and policy outlined by the California Department of Education in cooperation with the American Library Association.

Library Collection

The library collection is arranged according to the DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM. The fiction and story collections are arranged in alphabetical order by the author's last name.

The nonfiction section, reference section and professional section (Teacher's Resource Room) are arranged accordingly:
000-099 General Works .

100-199 Philosophy & Psychology
200-299 Religion .
300-399 Social Sciences .
400-499 Languages .
500-599 Natural Sciences .
600-699 Technology .
700-799 Fine Arts & Recreation .
800-899 Literature .
900-999 History & Geography

Books by the same author with the San1e call number are shelved by the author's last name and then alphabetically by the book title.

Library Rules

The library media center is part of the school campus; therefore school rules must be followed in the library.

The library rules are:
1. Follow all school rules.
2. No drinking, eating or gum chewing.
3. Always enter the library quietly.
4. Do not go behind the checkout desk without the librarian's permission.
5. Handle all library materials with care.
6. Return books on time.
7. When talking use only a whispering voice.
8. Leave the library in the same condition, as it was when you entered.
9. Return all materials used to their proper place.
10. Keep chairs on all four legs.
11. Never cut, tear or write on any library materials.

For a book:

For an encyclopedia:

For a magazine or newspaper:

The titles are in italic print, if you are doing a hand written bibliography, underline the titles
